One day – one stage – no clashes. Unlike the glut of bands (and undesirable camping conditions) of the New Year festivals, FOMO provides all the glory of the festival without the blistering heat and bucketing rain of festivals past. Bear Family kicked off the first official weekend of 2017 with a bang at the home of FOMO at the Brisbane Riverstage leg of the festival’s run.
Even early party starters Lastlings could be heard right from the edge of the Botanic gardens as punters emerge on this sunny Saturday. Hannah Wants delivered Daft Punk-esque tracks like Rhymes. New York trap lord Desiigner sets the crowd into an absolute frenzy with massive hits like Panda and Timmy Turner turning the day from hot to fire.
FOMO was a total discord of the senses; the sunshine flowing down Riverstage’s brink seemed so harmonious and pleasant compared to the chaotic energy of DJs and singers alike pulsing big club hits and bangers from the fold of the hill.
Festival rats and fashionistas alike were also in abundance yet again – massive crowds starting to come in droves by the lunch mark. Some chose the loud statement group costume such as groups all decked out in purple disco pants, purple hair and purple sneakers. Then of course there’s the euphoric generation of Queenslanders hiding in plain sight with the loudest of shirts with the grubbiest of Vans.
If you actually gathered up all the shirts boys took off in the mosh pit and tied them together you could create a rope for Empire of the Sun to Tarzan swing into their set from the top of QUT.
That didn’t happen unfortunately, but what did happen was an incredible set from Empire of the Sun and of course Flostradamus too! Despite the forecast for storms all week here in the home of the brown snake, it seems EOTS brought the sun with them to shine down on all the bands that played at FOMO 2017’s huge line up. Sorry folks, the year is all down hill from here. FOMO was the peak. Until Laneway that is –wink-
