Major Leagues’ Guide To… North Brisbane

860

Brisbane indie sweethearts/part time comedians Major Leagues have taken the time out to answer the questions that keep us up at night… Where to go/what to do on the Northside of Brisbane?
Major Leagues’ debut record Good Love is out Friday 16th June and it can’t come soon enough!

WHERE TO EAT?

Guzman y Gomez just opened up a drive through store in Albany Creek and it has changed my life. IN A GOOD WAY. Jaimee’s sis has a great little coffee shop / breakfast nook called The Tiller in Alderley, it’s super close to the studio so they’re our go to for a pre-rehearsal bite.

WHERE TO DRINK?

The Kedron Brook Hotel is walking distance from my place. It is in no way a fancy pub, but it’s got pool tables, some ridiculously bad entertainment, and those super cold taps that only shitty pubs seem to have. There’s also a new cool bar that opened up in Alderley called Ploughman; it’s small, cosy & its logo is chroma key blue which just looks sick. You could also put on your Big W button-down dress shirt and go to a show at Eatons Hill Hotel; they somehow have the weirdest shows there. I just looked on their website and they have everything from Salt’n’Pepa to DAVID DUCHOVNY?

WHERE TO AIRBNB?

It’s more of a day trip kinda place, but ill charge you $35 to sleep in our spare bedroom.

WHERE TO PARTY?

You have two choices, my neighbours Ron & Lisa make a hangover inducing homebrew and feed you 3kg of boiled peanuts – I go there when I hate myself and want to talk to people that couldn’t care less about your problems and tell great stories. Or you can go to the black sheep bottle O, grab a case of mangos, 3 bottles of cab sav, and invite all your friends around and put on heaps of Prince.

WHERE TO EAT AT 2AM?

SURPRISINGLY, the north side does have a place. I didn’t say it was good, but it is food, albeit a biodegrading bowl of tinned chickpeas, tabouleh that’s been chopped by a 5year old with a spoon and a $15 pricetag. If that sounds delicious Charlies Raw Squeeze is your jam, just never talk to me again.

WHERE TO FIND YOUR NEW FAVOURITE BAND?

Back in the big smoke of Brisbane which you can acutely see from many of the Northside’s finest peaks.

WHERE TO ESCAPE THE TOURISTS?

I considered leaving this out, it is a serious secret… But if you go to the Albany Creek Produce store it is effectively a free zoo.

WHERE TO SPEND YOUR HUNGOVER DAYS?

Jump in the car – or maybe get someone who’s not so hung to drive, and go for a spin around Mt Nebo, Mt Samson or Clear Mountain, they’re all super pretty and have big bushy walks.

WHAT TO COMPLAIN ABOUT WITH OTHER LOCALS?

Electricity prices, the heat, the traffic on old northern road between 7-9am and Tim Mander.

WHERE TO FIND TRUE LOVE?

The Puma Petrol Station in Everton Park is the only petrol station I’ve found in Brisbane where they still pump your gas. The dude is such a kind loving person, he knows everyone by name, and if he isn’t just constantly getting hit on there is something fundamentally wrong with this world.

WHERE TO AVOID?

Teralba Park at night, actually it’s just dumb to walk through any park at night unless you have a badass dog.

WHICH NORTHSIDE BANDS TO LISTEN TO WHILST HERE?

Robert Forster lives on the Northside, so you should start there, then you can enjoy some Custard & Screamfeeder. You could probably even listen to some hip cool current bands but fucked if I know who they are.

THE ULTIMATE NORTHSIDE MUST HAVE?

A GPS and a healthy hate for the eastside.

Bobby Rein

Bobby is one of Bear Family's earliest family members. He has a sweet beard and likes to take photos, sing songs and brew the occasional beer. If you see him at a show, give him a cuddle.
