Polish Club’s Guide to… Antwerp, Belgium

Sydney based, two-piece rockers Polish Club are mid-way through their AUS/NZ tour, of their brand new debut record, Alright Already. The legends managed to take the time out to give us their Guide to Antwerp, Belgium. Give Beeping a spin, book some tix to Belgium, and kick yourself if you missed out on tix to their intenso show.

Where to Eat?

One touristy but worthwhile thing to do is go somewhere with mosselen (mussels). It’s served in a giant black pot with a side of chips and your choice of soupy sauce. Don’t fuck around, get the white wine ones (witte wijn).

Also get some stoofvlees (beef stew) at Cafe Shilling with a big serve of chips.

Oh and ask around and find a broodje. It’s just a sandwich in a fresh bread roll but they have amazing fillings like prepare/americain (raw meat mince and onion).

Where to Drink?

I mean anywhere. The beer is obviously awesome. There are some nice, albeit touristy, bars in Groenplaats and Grote Markt, where the cathedral is.

De Vagant is a classic genever bar in the city. They serve a shitload of different types of genever.

Where to AirBNB?

Anywhere near the Meir would be convenient.

Where to Party?

There is a godawful karaoke bar on Grote Markt, I believe it’s called Park Avenue. It’s the worst bar in the world and I absolutely love it.

Where to eat at 2am?

Frituur No.1 (Frituur Nummer Een). A frituur is the name of a place that basically exclusively sells fried goods. No.1 is the one on Hoogstraat near the cathedral. It’s basically the reason why you wanna go to Antwerp. Get yourself some bitterballen (fried, crumbed balls of mystery meat) and curryworst/frikandel (sausage covered in mayo and onion).

Where to find your new favourite band?

Some other country.

Where to escape the tourists?

It’s not a super touristy place, so that’s not too much of a worry.

Where to spend your hungover days?

There are a few museums and galleries that are great. The MAS is awesome. The building itself is reason enough to go.

What to complain about with other locals?

French people. French-speaking Belgians. Dutch people. Etc.

Where to find true love?

Well, I mean France is just a couple hours south. And the Netherlands is just an hour north. There’s also that karaoke joint I mentioned earlier.

Where to avoid?

The zoo is pretty gross and depressing. And zoos are generally awful.

Which Antwerp bands to listen to whilst here?

Soulwax are the best Belgian band in forever. They’re from Gent but Belgium is so small, it’s all the same. dEUS are a classic Antwerp rock band from the 90s.

The ultimate Antwerp must have?

Fried foods. Food in general. And booze.
