Georgi Kay is a name that has been floating around for the past few years, but I’ve never been able to put a song to the name. Her track In My Mind came on the radio the other day and I was thinking..”Where have I heard this before”?
BAM, it hits me- I’d heard the track a few times before, out of my mind at Stonewall on a Friday night. It’s a certified, 100% banger! But this track I was hearing on the radio wasn’t all lasers and four-to-the-floor, this was a much more refined, relaxed version.
Turns out Georgi Kay is the woman behind the banger, and that her track In My Mind was actually released earlier- those pesky mega dj’s had taken all the glory for themselves.
Georgi has gone from strength to strength since then, extricating herself from the club bangers to create her own mellow, laid back electro/soul.
We sat down with Georgi to discuss her upcoming EP Origins (out February 5th!), cats vs dogs and some big tips for Aussie artists looking to make their big break.
BF: Hi Georgi, first of all welcome back to Oz! Can you tell us three things you learnt about the US of A during your time in the States?
GK: Thank you! It’s good to be back. Ok firstly, Americans don’t say coriander – they say cilantro. It freaks me out a little. Secondly, coyotes are actually super chill to hang with. Just don’t look them in the eye. And thirdly, they LOVE Australian accents. So I always feel sassy.
BF: You’ve been away writing for a little while- a difficult process for a lot of aspiring artists. What would be your advice for any youngsters looking to start writing songs?
GK: Stay true to yourself. Don’t write for anyone else but you. No-one’s ever going to love your work as much as you do and how you do, so keep focus, stay humble and most of all enjoy it!
BF: What were your favourite cartoons growing up?
GK: Courage the Cowardly Dog, Samurai Jack, The Jetsons, Thundercats, Captain Planet, Power Rangers and Dragon Ball Z – to name a few!
BF: A big year ahead for you with the release of ORIGINS due to drop in early Feb- what are you personally looking forward to the most in 2016?
GK: I know! I’m so excited to hear what people have to say and what they think about it.
And I can’t wait to play live. As well as the EP tracks I’ve got some tasty new songs to play you all 😉
BF: What were some key differences between the US music scene and your home ground of WA? What can young Aussie artists learn from our overseas mates?
GK: I’d say there’s more of a familiar theme going on in the commercial pop scene in the US.
Compared to the Aussie scene which is quite eclectic and diverse in genre and sound.
However I really dig that the US has so many different tastemaker radio stations.
I think it’s really cool and important to showcase as much talent out there as possible.
Too many people in the music industry worldwide are playing it way too safe.
Risks, drive, hunger and passion are what make music so beautiful and so worth it.
I’d like to see more of that.
BF: Cat person or Dog person? Elaborate
GK: Cats. One day I will have an army of them.
BF: You’ve spent time with some amazing artists around the world (Ed Sheeran, Axwell etc), what would be a dream collaboration for you?
GK: I would LOVE to collaborate with an iconic left-field female artist super group on an album.
Bjork, Lorde, Grimes, MO, Elliphant & Robyn maybe. We’d be like DC’s Suicide Squad but all badass chicks – and I’d probably have twin katana swords like Leonardo from the Ninja Turtles.
BF: Finally, in a complete cone of self-promotion, what is it about your new EP ORIGINS that people should be excited about?
GK: It’s my soul in listenable form.
So if you really want to get to know me, my inspirations, my past and my future direction – then listen to it and tell me what you think!
