Halcyon Drive – Untethered Bear Family review

SWEET FRESH DELICIOUS! Halcyon Drive- Untethered

Words by Eli Marsland

Melbourne trio Halcyon Drive grace us with their second offering from their new EP ‘Untethered’ due on May 20.

Splashing water claps open up into a shimmering chorus that’s like an audio Faberge Egg – it’s possible the vocalist might just dissolve at any given point over the 2:59 you spend with lead vocalist Michael Oechsle. Just when you think you’ve heard every percussive element in the galaxy, they interpolate the (closely mimicked) sound of your iPhone battery dying when you have under 20% battery.

But this song is not running out of battery – no. It’s putting a mask on expectation-laden pop-music and asks if you want to stick around to hear an endearing, anthemic, and chaotic 2nd single. There’s few acts that are crafting pop music with such eccentricity, and that’s what makes ‘Untethered’ all the more delightful.
